College Newsletter - 3 March - Term 1, Week 5 2022

Welcome

Mr Matthew Brennan - College Principal (K-12)

Dear Parents and Carers of the St Gregory’s College Community,

The school year is now well underway, and the students and staff have settled into a very positive and promising routine. Despite some members of the community having to spend a few days away from the College due to isolation requirements, we have been able to maintain high levels of continuity with academic work and there has been a wide range of other events and activities outside of the classroom where students have showcased their skills and talents.

Lenten Period

This week on Wednesday 2 March, Ash Wednesday marked the commencement of the Lenten period in the Church’s liturgical calendar. On the day, liturgies were held in both the Junior School and Senior School. I thank Mrs Clarke for her preparation and the senior student leaders who led these liturgies.

Marist Solidarity Appeal

Once again, this year during the Lenten period, the College will be supporting the work of Caritas Australia and the Marist Solidarity Appeal for the new Marist school in Timor-Leste. These are real opportunities for St Gregory’s College students and families to open their hearts with love and hope to the needs of the world. The fundraising for Australian Marist Solidarity will continue beyond Lent.

Staff Professional Learning Days

A reminder to parents and carers about the two staff professional learning days being held this week on Friday 4 March and Monday 7 March, which are both pupil free days.

Opening College Mass - Friday 11 March 2022

We look forward to welcoming a large contingent of family members to the College Opening Mass which will be held on Friday 11 March, commencing at 9.00am in the Br Luke Hall. Given the limited opportunities in recent times to have visitors on site, I hope that parents and carers can attend this celebration. I extend a particular invitation to new College families who will not have previously had this opportunity to attend one of our community Masses.

College Open Day - Sunday 13 March 2022

Many prospective College families have already registered to attend our Open Day on Sunday 13 March. The Junior School Open Day runs from 9.00am to 11.00am and the Senior School Open Day runs from 9.00am to 12.00pm. If parents and carers know of families interested in attending the Open Day, please direct them to the College website where they can register for this event. This annual event is always a wonderful occasion where we can showcase the College and provide our guests with a tour and information about the wonderful opportunities available to students attending St Gregory’s College. I thank the many current parents who will assist on the day as volunteers and the many staff and students who will give up their Sunday morning to attend this event.

Term 1 Dates

Trinity Catholic College Lismore - MSA Flood Appeal

The devastating floodwaters that inundated Lismore in recent days have completely covered Trinity Catholic College, causing damage to every classroom, staff area and facility. Whilst the town and College are used to floods and are well prepared for such events, the magnitude of this flood is beyond anything previously experienced. The destruction at the College is significant and the hardship on many hundreds of College families is acute, reflecting the situation for communities throughout the northern rivers region of NSW and southeast Queensland.

As fellow Marists, as we watch and listen to the news reports, we are compelled to ask, “How can we help?” One practical way is to provide financial support to the College community in order to help rebuild their school and more importantly the lives of the people who are Trinity Catholic College.

Donations for this urgent crisis can be sent to:

Welcome from Mr Joel Weekes

Mr Joel Weekes - Assistant Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Members of the St Gregory’s College family,

Welcome to another Newsletter and the end of Week 5. I am so impressed with the way our community have started the year; the classrooms are energized the teachers are enthusiastic and it is so lovely to see our parents starting to come back on-site at both the Senior School and Junior School with various events. As we evaluate the risk of each event, we have high hopes of ensuring that we have as many events this year to continue to build on that community and culture that is so important at a College like St Gregory’s.

Relationships Matter!

It’s been a really tough couple of years and, as we come back into 2022 with a somewhat new reality, its moments like this that serve as a reminder of the centrality of relationships in education. It reminds me of a saying that I heard many years ago ‘Students don’t learn subjects, they learn teachers.’

Whilst this statement runs the risk of underselling the importance of the planning and preparation that teachers do to prepare lessons, and the importance of the students learning content and skills, it does highlight the critical role that relationships play in the learning process.

As Acting Deputy Principal, I have the pleasure of seeing students in classes and witnessing them being motivated by these relationships and the teachers driven by these relationships. Connection and relationships are also critical in developing and maintaining wellbeing. As we headed back to face to face teaching this year, this will remain a key priority for the teachers as we build learning cultures in the classroom.

The Hidden Curriculum – What it means to be a St Greg’s student?

Whilst much is spoken about in schools in regard to curriculum and areas such as sport, one of the areas that is often overlooked is the schools ‘hidden curriculum’. The hidden curriculum is often unspoken, yet commonly understood messages that are communicated to students through the action, structure and relationships that exist within a school. Interestingly, the hidden curriculum can be a stronger voice to the students than the organised and obvious learning in the classroom.

As we consider what it means to be a St Gregory’s College student, it is crucial that we understand what it means to be a ‘person of character’. Our Marist Pillars and qualities of a Marist Learner that we regularly refer to in the College Diary are not just words, these are the attributes that we want our students to enact and action. We need to continue to engage our students in conversations about how they treat one another, their parents, other adults and members of our community so that they realise the importance of character and relationships above themselves.

Partnership

I want to encourage parents to be confident in approaching us directly to discuss matters that may be affecting your child’s education. This may be a positive experience that they have had or likewise possibly some constructive feedback which will help us to focus on improving what we provide and how we teach and care for your child.

It continues a bit of a theme of mine, that successful learning outcomes for your children relies on the valuable partnership between home and school. We need to work together to provide a high-quality educational experience for your children which meets their needs and models exemplary behaviours, attitudes and values.

As our College motto states ‘you will reap what you sow’.

Known and Loved

Earlier this week we celebrated Ash Wednesday, a most important day in our Church calendar as the first day of the season of Lent. This Season will last up until Easter. It is a time when we are conscious that we are not perfect, and we try to make ourselves better people. During the forty days of Lent, we are invited to reflect on our relationship with God and with others.

Boarding at St Gregory's College

The beginning of the school year has been extremely challenging, but enjoyable for our Boarding students. The uncertainty of COVID rules for residential environments was frustrating, however, we were able to successfully manage the onboarding of students at the beginning of year. I must thank all our parents for their patience as we have worked through the NSW government requirements and congratulate your sons for the adaptability they have shown, managing weekly rapid antigen tests, and navigating changing rules regularly. Your support and understanding at this time have made the task of safely running our community much easier. I must also thank Mrs Jaime Underwood for the amazing knowledge, support and professionalism she provides our community daily in supporting your sons. The successful operation of the boarding school would not be possible without her.

Lord Howe Island - It's a Wrap!

Joel Weekes and I had the pleasure of travelling to Lord Howe Island (LHI) last week. We currently have six students from LHI, and we took the opportunity to meet with current and future families at a number of functions. The highlight of the trip was the opportunity to speak to the students at the LHI Central School about Boarding at St Gregory's College. We then got to attend the Discovery Day celebrations with the community as well as spending some time looking around Lord Howe Island.

A big thank you to Emma Crombie, Amy Hickey, Kellie Katramados and Steve and Janet Sia for their organisation and hospitality over the two days. We look forward to welcoming more LHI students to St Gregory’s in the future.

Sport Report Term 1, Week 5 2022

Our involvement in joining the Parramatta Diocese for sport has seen numerous trials and training sessions for upcoming Thursday representative competitions, as well as PDS Gala Days, begin. The College hast started our Thursday sporting competitions with some mixed success over the past few weeks on the back of some outstanding team and individual performances.

Firstly, a massive thank you to the parents/carers who have completed the online Permission Form. Participation in all College carnivals, PDS competitions, College Representative teams and Thursday sport programs will be permissible once completed.

The College is still operating under the guidelines that no parents/carers should be on college grounds or attend Parramatta Diocese sporting competitions. Our sporting competitions require all stakeholders to abide by the safety guidelines so all competitions can continue to run.

A reminder of the upcoming trials for all Thursday Representative sports. Students have been asked to select a sport/activity that they will participate in from Term 1 Week 6 to Term 2 Week 9. If students fail to make a Thursday Representative team, students will be directed to choose another sport option.

Please note that trials/training will continue on weekday afternoons to allow students involved in Summer Representative sports time to trial. These trials will take place on either Monday or Wednesday afternoons

ICAS Tests 2021

Last Year the ICAS tests were postponed due to COVID and held rather later in the year.

The following students were presented with their awards.

We congratulate them for participating and giving their best effort.

What has Year 1 Been Up To?

Year 1 has had a great start to Term 1, 2022. The children in Year 1 have been inquiring into the transdisciplinary theme ‘Who We Are’ with our Central Idea focusing on ‘How people interact influences relationships’. Using literature and drama to assist them, they have started the year by exploring how our actions influence others to build and maintain relationships.

Mirror mirror on the wall, there are learner profiles in us all!

Within our PYP program, Year 1 has been exploring the Learner Profiles. Students use these learner profiles to make connections to their everyday life and transfer these into their learning, on the playground and at home.

Our learner profile wall allows the students to look in the mirror and see themselves displaying the qualities of the learner profile, reminding us that we all have learner profiles within us.

As we inquire into ‘Who We Are’, Year 1 have learned how to be a Communicator, Open-Minded and Caring learner.

We asked a few students how they use the learner profiles at school:

Scarlett -

I can be a risk-taker when trying new things and challenging myself to complete my scroll of numbers.

Hudson -

I can be caring by helping others when they are hurt and being kind to my friends.

Ellie -

I can be a communicator by sharing my ideas and using a big voice.

Hugo -

I can be principled by being honest and fair when playing games.
