A Place of Great Diversity

Mr Matthew Brennan - College Principal (K-12)

Dear Members of the St Greg’s family,

St Gregory’s is a place of great diversity.  We have a community made up of people from all parts of the globe and all walks of life.  When I speak of community, I include quite purposefully staff, students, and parents alike.  I am in an incredibly fortunate position as the College Principal of St Gregory’s College to have regular, meaningful contact with all our stakeholders.

St Gregory’s is a College that regularly recognises the achievements of our community.  It is well documented, as can be evidenced in our newsletters, the broad range of successes academically, in sport and in the arts.  We have state finalists, national representatives, and outstanding sports and debating teams. Our College musical is a great success and many competitions that students at the College enter into, be it agricultural, sporting or academic spaces are also often won or we are well placed.

Leadership is a Verb

Mr Joel Weekes - Assistant Principal

Dear Members of the St Gregory’s Family,

Welcome back to Term 4 – I trust that this edition of the St Gregory’s College newsletter finds you well and that you are set for a big Term 4!

This week I had the pleasure, alongside Mr Coughlan to spend two days with our new Student Leadership Team for 2023/2024 in our Marist heartland in Mittagong. Over the two days we spent the time together looking at what leadership is, pulling apart the new leadership roles and structure, defining the responsibilities of our student leadership group, and exploring the legacy of these roles.  We had some much needed time together to plan our group and individual goals as a new collective leadership group.

Strong Minds, Gentle Hearts

Mrs Diana Ivancic - Head of Junior School

Dear Parents & Carers,

Last night I reconnected with the fellow pilgrims that I went on Pilgrimage with over zoom, revisiting our journey and our experiences. We also took time to pray as a group for the people in Israel who are experiencing such devastation, unrest and heartbreak at this time. We can’t underestimate how blessed we are to be in a place where we are safe and at peace. As Marists, we pray for those overseas who are impacted and continue to nurture the importance of treating each other with respect and, in the way of Mary, as Marists.

AFL School Cup State Final

On Wednesday 18 October, St Greg’s attended the State Final of the NSW/ACT AFL School Cup Competition at Central Coast Sporting Complex, Tuggerah.

We started the day against St Mary MacKillop College, Canberra with a win 52 (8.4) to 38 (6.2).  Round 2 was a battle against Xavier High School, Albury which despite leading at half time, we lost 38 (5.8) to 17 (2.5). We wrapped up the pool games with a convincing 67 (10.7) to 14 (2.2) win over Endeavour Sports High.

These results placed as second in our pool and pitted us against St Ignatius, Riverview who had placed second in the alternate pool. Our 26 (4.2) to 22 (3.4) win in this game places us third in the State!

The team has presented the school well and can be extremely proud of only ever losing one game throughout both days of rounds and finals.

PYP Exhibition - Year 10 Mentors

A small number of Year 10 students met in the Marian yesterday to reflect on their role as mentors during the PYP Exhibition held at the end of last Term. The PYP exhibition process marked a significant journey for our younger Year 6 peers, and our Year 10 mentors played a pivotal role in guiding them through it.

The mentors shared their growth and achievements, success stories, and areas in which the PYP exhibition and learning process could be made an even greater success in 2024. As they shared their stories and insights, it became clear that this mentorship went beyond academic benefits. It also involved developing stronger connections between the junior and senior school students and staff.

Mr Gannon, PYP Coordinator, and Mr Duggan, Stage 5 Academic Care Leader, were very appreciative of the insights gained from the Year 10 mentor students, as they sought to evaluate the pilot program. Some of the insightful and transformative comments made by the mentor students are included below.

“I feel like it was a great experience for us all and we all had a fantastic time being able to help the younger students.”

“I enjoyed the experience of teaching younger individuals about modern day problems and putting it in ways they can understand”.

“It has helped my organisation skills as I was contributing to the organisation of the students. This is great, since organisation will be a key part of studying in Stage 6.”

“It has allowed me to develop leadership skills and has allowed me to help out wherever possible. It was truly a great experience, one that I wish I had in primary school.”

HSC Mathematics Study

On Saturday 14th October the Annual HSC Mathematics Study Day occurred. It was offered to the Year 12 students that were sitting the Mathematics Extension 2, Mathematics Extension 1, Mathematics Advanced and Mathematics Standard HSC paper on the following Monday.

The Marian Centre was abuzz with a total of 46 students attending and 6 teachers. The atmosphere was filled with both peer tutoring, one-to-one teacher/student tutoring and teacher to small student group tutoring. We are hoping that this extra chance to have a focused study time on Mathematics will pay off in their HSC results.

A huge thank you to the teachers for giving up your time on the weekend and to the gentlemen that attended.

Year 2 - How the World Works

Over the last term, Year 2 have had a lot of interesting and exciting things happen.

During our PYP unit: ‘How the world works,’ we were investigating forces and energy that help to improve products. Through this central idea we looked deeply into the different forms of energy, the effects of forces in product design and the process of scientific investigations.

We undertook a variety of different investigations such as:

  • How can we use sound energy?
  • How can we use light energy and what produces light energy?
  • What materials can we use to make maracas?
  • How can we use heat energy?

The effect of gravity on an Egg

Our egg drop experiment was the highlight of the unit. The students were placed in groups of four and were challenged that if we dropped an egg off the balcony, what materials would keep the egg from breaking? The students discussed the properties of the different materials and designed their own plans. As little scientists, they decided who was bringing in certain materials and made decisions independently. The day finally came, and they created their apparatus. We had some groups who were successful, and their eggs did not crack! They all had a great time creating this experiment and reflecting on what they could do better next time.

Year 6 News

PYP Exhibition

On 20th September, Year 6 had their Exhibition that was the culmination of their PYP journey throughout primary school. This year’s Exhibition focused on the transdisciplinary theme of ‘How We Express Ourselves’ and required students to research and engage in a range of primary and secondary sources related to their chosen issue. They were also required to present a creative piece as part of the opening ceremony where the students conducted a protest and performed a dance.

St Gregory’s and the wider community were extremely impressed with the quality of work produced and presented by the students.

We congratulate the students on their efforts and the overall success of the Exhibition process.

Term 4

This is the final term of primary school for our Year 6 students. There will be many enjoyable experiences this term that will consolidate their learning and also the close relationships that they have made with each other. We look forward to the remaining weeks with our students and hope that they remember their remaining year of primary school fondly.
