College News and Events

Mr Matthew Brennan - College Principal (K-12)

Dear members of the Greg’s family,

November is a month in the Church’s calendar when we remember in a special way those who have died. I recently read a beautiful reflection by Tony Clarke from Marist Schools Australia reflecting on those special ones in our lives who have passed away.

At any given time, most of the world believes that death isn’t final, that some form of immortality exists. Most people believe that those who have died still exist in some state, in some modality, in some place, in some heaven or hell, however that may be conceived.

As Christians, this is our belief: We believe that the dead are still alive, still themselves and, very importantly, still in a living, conscious and loving relationship with us and with each other. That’s our common concept of heaven and, however simplistic its popular expression at times, it is wonderfully correct.

We believe that we are still in communion with those who have died. Among other things, this says that we can relate to them, speak to them and be spoken to by them.

During this month, let us think of those who have lost loved ones, particularly those recently, in our community.

Mr Joel Weekes - Assistant Principal

Dear Members of the St Gregory’s College Family,

As I reflect on another week that has flown on by, one cannot dismiss some of the wonderful things that have been happening around the College of late. With so much happening, it is always good to stop, pause and reflect on how lucky we are to be a part of such a loving, connected and vibrant school community. Events such as Badgally Beatz and Lunch on the Lawn have shown once again the power of a strong and connected community.

St Greg's Culture

Mrs Diana Ivancic - Head of Junior School

Last Friday was an awesome day at St Gregory’s Junior School. During the day, we welcomed over 400 grandparents to the Junior School, to participate in a liturgy, visit classrooms, share morning tea with their grandchildren and visit the Book Fair. Some grandparents had driven up to 5 hours to be there on the day.  What a spectacular event, to see so many grandparents walking out the gates grinning from ear to ear.

Later that evening, we hosted 90 new Kindergarten parents for 2023 to a Cocktail evening in the Marion Centre. Amongst them, about ten Old Boys stood in awe, reflecting on their years past at the Senior School. The room stood still as the group of Old Boys joined by the group of Boarding students who were serving on the night, belted out the Sub Tuum, as we all watched with goosebumps. It was certainly something unique.

Earlier that evening, Charlize & Mitchel (Junior School Captains) welcomed our new parents with a speech. They shared:

“When people ask me what it’s like at St Greg’s, the first thing that comes to mind is…I can’t put my finger on it….

I love coming to school every day. It’s like coming to family. At St Greg’s, family is really important – it’s actually one of our Marist characteristics.

…Culture! That’s the word I was looking for Mitchel. What makes us different is the culture.

It’s a bit hard to put your finger on it exactly, but we know that you are going to love the St Greg’s culture. And it starts right here, right now, tonight.”

Culture is what people talk about when they walk through our gates. It is steeped in the rich Marist traditions we hold dear, and it is in the vines that will continue to grow into the history we have not yet made.

You will reap what you sow.

2022 Christmas Appeal

Last week we were privileged to share a week of Retreat with the Senior class of 2023. In his evaluation, one of our young men wrote, ‘It gave me a chance to sort through things, to unwind and think about my life.’ Another wrote that the real strength was in ‘the sharing of stories which made us think, reflect and feel encouraged and supported.’ Another expressed, ‘I went in not expecting much, but am amazed at how powerful the experience was.’ One of the many themes we explore during Retreat is the notion of gratitude. Whilst we share with all of humanity the highs and lows that are part of being human, we have many social and economic advantages by being born in this country, living in this city and being a part of the Greg’s community. It is humbling to hear our young men speak of their gratitude to their families, teachers and fellow students. In return, we encourage them to reach out to those who are less fortunate and need our support.

Wellbeing News!

As we come to the back end of this term, I continue to remind students that they need to finish the year with strong focus and dedication. This is also expected in the way they wear their uniform and navigate around the College.

I express my ongoing attention to getting the little things right! This term, students are working to the end of year exams that are fast approaching. The next 3 weeks of school are very important as we constantly remind students to set achievable targets.

Another important reminder is the use of Opal Cards on buses. The College needs to make sure we keep all bus services running to best support students getting to and from school. Unfortunately, of late, students are not tapping onto bus services, so we are urging all students to consistently tap onto the bus services each trip as priority.

CCC Basketball State Champions!

Junior Basketball Team – CCC State Champions!

St Gregory’s Junior Basketball Squad (Year 7 and 8) played very strongly to win the PDS Gala Day competition in Term 3. After winning this tournament the boys qualified for the NSW CCC State Championships. The Championships were held at Bankstown Basketball Stadium on October 31 and November 1. The team were confident going into the competition as they had won everything before them at the PDS level, but there was a sense of the unknown going up against the best Catholic school teams in the state.

Sport Week Wrap Up - Term 4, Week 5 2022

Summer sport is in full swing with 3 rounds already completed. Most teams have made a successful start to the season, in particular it has been great for the boys involved in cricket to have a steady start to the season after a very disruptive last few seasons with Covid and the rain.

Mrs Sligar and the Berg Shield Cricket team made a fantastic start to their campaign with a convincing victory in their opening round against Patrician Brothers Fairfield. Mr Morrisey and the Downie Shield team have their first match against Bede Polding Windsor this coming Tuesday 15th November

Both the Junior (Years 7/8) and Intermediate (Years 9/10) Basketball squads attended the NSW CCC Basketball Championships and were terrific across both days of the tournament. The Intermediate side went through the first day undefeated and were beaten in a thrilling contest in the quarter final. The Junior side were terrific all the way through their pool matches qualifying first and progressed to the final. Up against a tough St Edwards side from Gosford the boys managed to win 30-24. What a fantastic achievement for Mr Limbrey and all the boys involved.

The U13, U15 and U17 Rugby League teams had their matches against Illawarra Sports High School a few weeks ago. With wet conditions all three games were low scoring affairs. In fact the U13 and U15 matches were both Nil all at halftime. The U13 boys went on to lose 12-0 to square up the ledger with Illawarra Sports at a game apiece this year. The U15 boys managed a last minute try to win the game 6-0. Finally, the U17 squad played a back-and-forth game they came right down to the wire with Illawarra snatching victory 15-14.

Around the Farm

Riley Keogh, Year 12 Primary Industries, Agriculture and Show Team member won the Lionel Penberthy award this year. Lionel was kind enough to attend the college to get a photo with Riley. Lionel spoke of the “old days” on the farm at St Greg’s. He would come in over the Christmas break to help feed the stock, help with show team training and one of his highlights was getting the students to compete at Sydney Royal and win the Heavy weight carcase competition.

Riley was a worthy winner of this prestigious award, and it was fantastic to see Lionel at the College again.

We thank Lionel for his continued support of the Agriculture students.

The boys have been busy the past few weeks around the farm. Year 9 have been learning to operate the tractor and its implements. Year 10 have been vaccinating lambs, tattooing the 2023 stud cattle show team, slashing paddocks, weeding, weighing and drafting cattle. Year 11 Primary Industries have been lamb marking and out on work placement. Year 8 have been learning about GPS cows and tracking our Shorthorn Montana!

The 2023 Sydney Royal Steers have also arrived and are being broken in. We are impressed with how quiet they are and how well they have taken to being handled.  We thank the following studs for their continued support of our show program- RB Simmentals (Wagga Wagga), Palmerston holdings (Gloucester), Lopresti Family, Southern Cross Speckle Park (Tumut), Vaccaro Family and Keigho (Gunnedah).

Do you bite your thumb at me, sir?

Do you bite your thumb at me, sir?

It’s perhaps not a question you hear very often in 2022, but as a class in Year 8 English have recently learned, the sentiment is most certainly still understood! In tackling Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, a Year 8 class has learned that whilst the words and actions used might be different, insults have pretty much remained the same. To “bite one’s thumb” at someone was an antagonistic act in Shakespearean England and would have been received with a great degree of offence. The class was tasked with re-enacting the much-loved scene. This was met with much hilarity and a lot of giggling. All agreed that the gesture of “biting one’s thumb” was indeed provocative and made sense. When acted out, in person, this notion could be seen and understood far more palpably than the reading of the scene alone could unlock.

The class reinforced their love of acting when next, they took on the famous “balcony scene”. Budding Romeo’s and Juliet’s acted out impassioned declarations of love from the sweeping staircase outside the front of the 0100 block. Visitors might well have been shocked by the vision they would have stumbled across, but one thing is for certain: thespian culture is certainly alive and well at St Gregory’s College in 2022.

Spanish in the Junior School

Our focus this term has been on Cultural celebrations and why it's important to cultivate these. Spanish speaking cultures have many celebrations that include music, food, dance and religious messages.

After celebrating Spanish culture through our Spanish Festival, we decided to keep learning about many more celebrations that have a day or two dedicated to them. The students have been able to learn about Mexico’s Dia De Los Muertos, Peru’s Festival of Light and Colombia’s Flower Festival in Medellin to name a few.

This exposure to Latin and Central  American traditions  has encouraged conversations about their own cultural journeys and family traditions. We have found some to be very similar.

Throughout this term we have also been able to start expressing how we are feeling at the start of each day. We can now greet one another in Spanish and add a little extra with ‘me siento…’ which means, ‘I am feeling…’

It is great to see how Spanish is slowly growing in our school. Children are even correcting one another when we make mistakes and applying new words in their sentence writing.

K-2 Athletics Carnival

On Wednesday 9 November, students from K-2 enjoyed their sports carnival.

It was sheer joy watching the students participate in running races, tug-o-war, gumboot throwing and relays. It appeared that all students were enjoying themselves, cheering for their teammates and supporting their House teams.

Thank you to the energetic and dynamic coaches from Motiv8 sports that organised and ran the carnival for us.

Thank you to the staff who supported all the students and ensured they all participated and had a great day.

And thank you to the parents who came to support their children and our school. It makes it so much more enjoyable when parents support the staff by following the expectations and respectfully remain within the areas assigned. It was truly appreciated.

And in case you missed it, the winning team was Kilian!
