Wow, so much sport has erupted in the last few weeks allowing the students to flourish on the field and on the cross-country track.
Firstly, the College was well represented at the PDS Cross Country carnival where 11 students placed in the top 6 and will now progress to the NSWCCC carnival later this term.
NSWCCC Rugby League Championships were held on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st May. This is a very highly contested carnival with player agents, player managers and representative clubs all very busy finalising players future playing careers.
Congratulations to Charlie Guymer, Tom Fletcher, Tom Fisher, Jack Burrows and Heath Mason for representing the Parramatta Diocesan team. Oliver Kaluzyn and Lachlan Bush for representing the Sydney Metro team and finally to Year 10 students Lachlan Dooner, Cooper Cross and Jake Jones who were named in the NSWCCC Presidents team in the U18 and U15 teams respectively.
After some bruising hit-outs between Northern and Southern Country, Sydney and Parramatta Diocese, Sydney Metro and NSW Presidents team, the boys demonstrated some stand-out performances. All boys were given a fantastic opportunity to showcase their skills across two days, bar Cody Parry who was concussed on Friday and Tom Fisher who succumbed to an ankle injury.
The NSWCCC Football Championships were held on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 May at Valentine Park. Both students were named in the PDS Two team and once again, it will be a very highly contested two days of football. More news in the next newsletter. Whilst on Football, further congratulations to Cooper Ross as he trialled and was selected into the NSWCCC U16 Football team. He will compete at the NSW All Schools Championships in mid-June.
The College finally welcomed back some sunshine and parents as the College hosted several games of rugby league. Our College grounds are still recovering from the big rainfalls and special mention to Gerard Fetterplace and his amazing maintenance team for their efforts in preparing, maintaining and preserving our beautiful College grounds week in and week out.
PDS Sport Reports
With Week 1 of Football and Rugby League games being washed out, our season got even smaller. The boys were ready to rip into our future games and as you can see, we achieved some pretty good results.
1st Grade Mr Witton | Lost 4 - 3 | The boys started brightly and with some better finishing by Bryce could have been up by 3. Unfortunately, not getting goal side of our defender allowed a tap in far post. This lapse off a corner would also see us concede a second after a great save from Parkin but we were unable to clear the second ball. 1-0 going into the halftime break. Not long into the second half we once again allowed them a tap in at the far post. They boys were playing well and knocking the ball around well, we were just not putting them under enough pressure when they were on the ball. Bryce had another clear chance he was unable to convert. Bailey wheeler showed some brilliance by beat a couple of defenders and blasting the ball in from outside the box. Bryce didn’t have to wait long to get his goal, a poor clearance from the St Dom’s goalkeeper and he blasted a shot that the keeper parried into his own net. The boys started to take control of the game and St Dom’s resorted to long balls. Against the run of play St Dom’s got a corner and once again we were unable to clear and they scored. A late goal from Cooper West gave us a glimmer of hope but we couldn’t get the equaliser before the final whistle. MVP: Bryce Bell |
2nd Grade Ms Sawyer | Lost 5 - 1 | Second grade started the game with purpose and if we’re more clinical in front of goal could have been up by three. Instead they would be behind. It would soon be 3-0. Doms knocked the ball around well and we started to tire too quickly leading to some lapses in defence. The second half was much the same and Doms were able to put away another two goals. The boys didn’t give up and had a few chances and took one towards the end via a Kian shot into the top bins. Special mention to Lachlan Dady who played well in midfield and caused the opposition some headaches. MVP: Lachlan Dady - Laurentian |
Year 10 Mr Goodhew | Won 2 – 0 | St Greg’s lined up against St Dominic’s in our first game of the season. After lots of rain and a reduced competition the boys were raring to go. The first half was a very even contest, with both teams having several chances to take the lead, Cooper Ross and Lincoln Vella coming closest to opening the scoring. The second half started, and the St Greg’s boys picked up another level with Cooper Ross dribbling past 3 players before driving the ball into the top corner. Shortly afterwards we lost two players to injury and with a limited bench had to play most of the second half with 10 players. This did not stop the boys and after some great teamwork Anthony Zappia (on debut at striker - Anthony usually plays goalkeeper) squared the ball to Cooper who picked up his second of the match. A standout performer this week however Lachlan Suffell was tireless in the middle and was unlucky not to score himself after some great skill. Excellent effort Year 10. MVP’s – Cooper Ross (Donovan) and Lachlan Suffell (Molloy) |
Year 9 Mr Kripal | Lost 3 -2 | The boys started the game strong scoring from a corner. The opposition had a lucky break from an error and scored an equaliser. Mervyn Stone scored another goal to give Greg’s a 2-1 lead. In the second half, St Dominics had a good shot from distance to equalise. Despite dominating the game significantly, St Dominics had another break from an error to win the game 3-2. The boys played well and were very unlucky not to win. MVP: Chewe Kamufisa - Molloy |
Year 8A Mr Ivancic | Won 1 - 0 | The boys were pumped for our 1st game of the season. Playing against St Doms is always meet with much enthusiasm and preparedness. Last season we draw one and won the other game we played against them. With a solid line up we began what was to end up being a tussle of a game. The 1st half saw us dominate the entire half with 1/2 dozen shots at goal which didn't hit the back of the net. The boys were going frustrated as we dominated but couldn't show anything for it. The one-two pass between Max and Massi really controlled the game. The through balls to Finn and Dom really opened up their defence creating significant pressures on St Dom’s, but to no avail. Our defence line was solid led by Ben and Jesse and was able to stop a couple of breaks they had. The 1/2 time chat focused on maintaining our strategies and ensuring opportunities in front of the goals were converted. 2nd half saw an early break by Doms and a very close call in front of our goal which was superbly defended by Riley. 15 minutes into a tightly held 2nd half saw a one-two with Max, Massi and Dom and with a finishing strike on goal by Finn that made it to the bake of the net. 1 up and it was time to change the strategy and defend the remaining 5 minutes left for the game. MVP: Ben Lepre - Molloy |
Year 8B Mr Gersbach | Won 2 - 1 | An even game until St Greg's gave away a penalty for handball in the box. The penalty was saved by our keeper to keep us in the game. St Dom's scored a goal late in the first half. St Greg's equalised 5 minutes later. St Greg's gave away a penalty for handball in the box again and once again, St Dom’s missed the penalty. St Greg's scored the winner in the last 2 minutes of the game to clinch the win. MVP: Fraser Holdsworth - Laurentian |
Year 7A Mr Kawa | Lost 1 - 0 | On Thursday 19 May, Year 7A travelled to Nott Oval to take on St Dominic’s in what would be a very tense match. St Dominic’s took an early 1-0 lead after a lapse in defence. The boys quickly put the pressure on after hitting the cross bar from close range but unfortunately could not put the ball in the back of the net. The match was decided with a single goal and St Dominic’s took the victory on this occasion. |
PDS Rugby League
1st Grade Mr Morrison | | Due to the NSWCCC Rep round, Division 1 teams had a bye |
2nd Grade Mr Newell | | Due to the NSWCCC Rep round, Division 1 teams had a bye |
3rd Grade Mr Cave | vs Blacktown 1 Won 14 - 6 | A great start to the season by the St Greg’s 3rd Grade team with an impressive win over Blacktown 1 in the Division 2 competition. The forwards paved the way all game, grinding against a much bigger opposition that allowed our halves to set up and create multiple attacking sets. Tries: William Stimson, Blake Truman. Goals: Callum Rossiter 3 conversions MVP: Callum Rossiter |
4th Grade Mr Dinnen | vs Parramatta Marist Lost 44 - 4 | St Greg's kicked off to Parramatta and that was the story of the first half. Parramatta continued to score tries from the kickoff, due to our missed tackles. Parramatta were a much bigger side than our team, and our defence wasn't able to wrap up their players close to the line. In the first half St Greg's had the ball for only one set and tired legs didn't make much impact. The second half started off well, as we had the ball for a few sets. This had an immediate impact as we showed our attaching abilities, with runs out wide, with Kaylan Prince-Peckham finishing off a strong run to score a try. unfortunately we were unable to convert the try. Riley Brayshaw made a bone-crunching tackle in the middle, flattening a Parramatta forward twice his size. this lifted the spirits of the team, but was not enough, as we dropped the ball in attack. Parramatta was too strong in the end running away 44-4 winners against us. MVP: Riley Brayshaw - Donovan |
U15A Mr Coffey | | Due to the NSWCCC Rep round, Division 1 teams had a bye |
U15B Mr McMurdo | vs SGC U15C Won 48 - 12 | A gritty effort by 15c's who aimed up and played well, though were overpowered in some forward runs, especially where offloads lead to a second phase which resulted in loss of ground or points. MVP: Jackson Woolford - Donovan |
U15C Mr Munro | vs SGC U15B Lost 48 - 12 | The U15C had our first hit out against the St Greg’s U15B’s. The game started and proved to be a very tough and competitive first half with plenty of defense on our part, and also a try. St Greg’s B’s held possession for most of the half but only scored 2 tries and had a 12-6 lead. We were a tight unit in defense in our half of the field and especially on our goal line. Jack Jobson led from the front in the line making tackles all day and linking up with the outside backs to help score our try. The St Greg’s B’s managed to score on the bell to make it a 16-6 at half time. Full credit to the boys for keeping the energy throughout the first half. The opposition were the more conditioned team and were able to maintain this energy for the whole game. Our defense was solid except for a first missed tackles, quick play the balls and slow line speed towards the end of the sets. This allowed the B’s to slip through our line to add to their score. Harry Ryman used his speed and slick footwork to crack the defense and sprint his way to the try line. For our first hit-out against a tougher team, our boys showed a lot of potential for the season ahead. MVP: Jack Jobson - Laurentian |
U13A Mr Reyes | vs Blacktown Lost 42 – 0 | Our first game together as a team came up against a very strong outfit from Patrician Brother's Blacktown. We knew it would be a tough contest and faced a very physical first 15 minutes where Blacktown ran in 3 early tries. the boys then consolidated in defence and the half time score stayed at 18-0. In the second half we came out with a better attitude and started to get some use of the ball due to a few consecutive penalties, however were unable to crack their line. This took a little wind out of our sails and Blacktown ran in a few more tries ending the game at 42-0. It was a dogged effort coming up against an opponent who was bigger, faster and stronger but the boys came away from the match with the right attitude wanting to build from this. MVP: Llanden Granger - Laurentian |
U13B Mr Hastie | vs Blacktown 1 Won 38 -10 | |
Parramatta Diocesan Cross Country
It was a pleasure today to accompany 35 competitors to the Parramatta Diocese Cross Country carnival at the Sydney Equestrian Centre, Horsely Park. Despite an extremely muddy track, we had a successful day with some excellent individual and age group results. Bill Turner Cup - Round 2
The Bill Turner team faced off against local school Mt Carmel Catholic College in our round 2 fixture at Lynwood Park. With two players down due to injury and covid, Luke McElhone entered the team list and proved to be a valuable role player throughout the match.
The game was very lopsided as we dominated the first half with possession mainly being played in our attacking half. Our defensive tactic to press and force long balls allowed numerous opportunities close to goal. Our team build up plays also permitted multiple passes through the defensive lines which gave Merv Stone, Lachlan Suffell, Luka Mandalinic and Xavier Dalpra numerous shots on goal.
After several shots on goal, we were finally successful in the 10th minute after a Mervyn Stone tap in.
The team were still focused on too many individual chances close to the goal, and this was the main directive at the break. Our midfield players of Max Anastasio, Declan Malone were instrumental throughout the game with their control, distribution and poise in directing the team around the park. Great work by Sebastian Francois and Levi Tuioti who contributed to the team's play with solid role play. The second half began the same as it ended, with multiple opportunities on goal without success. Key subs were made, and seconds late, a great team goal was constructed by Finn Miller finding Xavier Dalpra at the top of the box for uncontested shot on goal. Minutes later, Chewe Kamufisa blitzed his way around and through the opposition to score a fantastic Special mention to Chewe who was a standout from the game. Chewe offers so much on the field, finding his best position in a talented team is not so difficult when he delivers such a wide base of skills and abilities.
With the game wrapping up, Jet Jeffress who battled through with a corked thigh made one final run up the field and to his best efforts, tapped the ball in off a cross which sealed the win and the game at 4-0. Still some fine-tuning to be made, but very happy with the teams' effort as we move on to play Mamre Anglican College away in our round 3 fixture.
