Student Leaders Camp

The eighteen student leaders elect for 2023 travelled to Mittagong from Monday to Wednesday this week to begin planning for their tenure as College Leaders. The three-day camp was run by Mrs Clarke and attended also by Miss Keith. The students had many sessions to reflect and workshop things about St Greg’s that are celebrated and those that they would like to have a further impact on. I look forward to meeting with the young men on their return and, as a College, support them as they lead us in 2023.

Year 5 Trip to Canberra

This was also held at the beginning of this week. Many thanks to Mrs Ivancic, Mr Hayes, Mr Edwards, Mrs Tweedie and Mrs Burton for giving up family time to give our Year 5 students this wonderful experience to the Nation’s Capital.

Year 3 Camp

Thank you to the staff who attended Year 3 camp. To Mr Fuser, Miss Cefai, Mrs Consentino, Mr Howe for spending the three days with the students and Miss Bankowski and Mrs Bowen for popping in and seeing the campers in the evenings.

Pope article

In a recent audience for young people in Assisi on 24 September, His Holiness, Pope Francis, spoke to the youth of the world and told them “A society and economy without young people is sad, pessimistic and cynical.” In his address, the Pontiff gave three pieces of advice drawn from the life of St. Francis of Assisi to the young people from more than a hundred countries.

The first is to “look at the world through the eyes of the poor” and the weak. “May your daily choices not ‘produce’ discarded people,” he insisted.

“Do not forget about work, do not forget about workers,” he gave as a second piece of advice, asking them, “while you create goods and services, do not forget to create work, good work and work for everyone.”

The third signpost was “incarnation,” which Francis explained by saying that those who have left a positive mark on history “translated ideals, desires, and values into concrete actions”.

As a community that have the incredible privilege and responsibility to, in partnership with parents and carers, shape our next generation of leaders, we must provide opportunities for our young people to develop a moral conscience, not just prepare them for being ‘successful’. It is a timely reminder for us as a community to continue to have our students challenge the norms and give them voice for change.

Just this week, we have had the opportunity to welcome parents of students applying for Year 7 2024. This is a new venture, where we are enrolling students into the Senior School earlier. In these interviews, it has been pleasing to note the parents’ answers to the, ‘Why St Greg’s’? question. Our incoming and existing parents put so much value on the type of student that passes through St Gregory’s College.

A few examples provided were; driving past the students waiting for the morning Camden Buses; the way they greet visitors as they pass through the playground; the high standards of wearing the blue and maroon uniform; the high expectations of behaviour and accountability and the main factor being, the type of students that will leave this wonderful College with a great education.

STUDENT LEADERS

Our new Student Leaders for 2022/2023 delivered their goals for the next 12 months to the College community today, which comes off the back of a very successful Leadership Retreat in Mittagong this week led by Mrs Clarke and Mrs Keith.

Their goals for the next 12 months in the leadership space are:

1. To maintain the culture of this College that we love
2. To energise the Monday morning gathering in the Senior School
3. To promote active involvement in the Pastoral Care, Co-curricular, and Big Brother programs
4. To add to the past successes of the Boarding Family Weekend for the whole College community.

We wish our Student Leaders well in their pursuit to lead our College over the next 12 months with their vision which we are all excited to be a part of.

A very warm welcome to our new members of staff and returning members of staff. 

• Mr Shaun Humphries - First Nations Liaison Officer. Mr Humphries started with us on Monday 17 October and we welcome him to our community.
• Mr Ben Rossetto – Science Teacher. Mr Rossetto is filling in for Mr Malcom Stokes who is on Long Service Leave in Term 4.
• Mrs Melissa Partridge – Science Teacher. Mrs Partridge is filling in for Ms Elizabeth Parsons who is on leave this term.

FINISHING DATES

Our Year 12 students have now commenced their Higher School Certificate examinations which will conclude on Friday 4 November. We continue to wish them well in all their HSC Exams!

Our Year 11 students conclude the first term of their Higher School Certificate course on Wednesday 7 December.

Our Junior School (K – 6) conclude their term on Wednesday 7 December.

Our Years 7-10 students finish the year on Friday 2 December, with their final Semester 2 examinations commencing in Week 8 on Monday 28 November and concluding on Friday 2 December.

I have been in awe of the Year 6 students, who have engaged in their PYP Exhibition Units of Inquiry. This wonderful opportunity is a culmination of their participation in the Primary Years Programme. The students have been researching, meeting weekly with staff mentors from the junior school and senior school, interviewing experts, innovating and preparing for their exhibition. To see what 11- and 12-year-old children are capable of when we give them the opportunity, is inspiring. I invite and certainly encourage all our families to attend the PYP Exhibition on Thursday 27 October at 6:00pm in the Junior School library.

This week was also a wonderful opportunity for our Year 5 students and Year 3 students to be risk-takers and venture out of their comfort zones to attend the Year 5 trip to Canberra and the Year 3 Camp to Teen Ranch.

Given the impact of the past two years, for most students this was the first time they have slept away from home; it certainly put many of them out of their comfort zone. Part of our mission at St Gregory’s is to provide a holistic education for our students, to walk beside them as they try new things, move out of their comfort zones and achieve growth in every aspect of their lives.

Nine teams were given an hour to work on thirty problems which included traditional maths questions, logic problems as well as a few riddles. Each team included a student from Stages 3, 4, 5 and 6 as well as any two other people. Students recruited teachers, ex-students, and parents to join their teams. The Marian Centre was buzzing with energy as the teams worked together to solve as many questions as possible in the time.

Mr Andy Tran from the University of Sydney’s School of Mathematics and Statistics joined one of the teams for the Relay and then presented a talk about his journey from high school mathematics and maths enrichment activities to his Ph.D. research, where he is using mathematics to develop less invasive ways to diagnose coronary artery disease.

The Junior School Mathematics Enrichment Group, under the guidance of Mrs Hackett and with support from Mr Perna, have spent the last few months investigating the Junior School Pick Up process. Students spent hours collecting data, analysing data, and hypothesising, to determine the most ideal time to pick up a student at the Junior School.

The investigation was entered into the Australian Association of Mathematics Teacher’s National Mathematics Talent Quest. Not only did the students win the NSW entry, but they have just received notification that they were successful in being awarded first place Nationally. Students from the Junior School Maths Enrichment Group will attend an awards ceremony online next week. We are extremely grateful for the work that Mrs Hackett does with Maths Enrichment in the College, and we congratulate the students for their success.

Mr Goodhew Vaping presentation “What is Vaping?”

In week 1 this term, Mr Goodhew presented on tobacco and vaping. The information given was current and insightful.

Below is a sample of the presentation:

'Vaping' is the practice of inhaling and exhaling the vapour produced by an electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) or similar device

Vapour is produced by vapourising 'e-liquid' that is contained in a small pod in the device

• cigarettes are burnt - producing smoke
• e-cigarettes vapourise liquid - producing vapour

E-cigarettes can contain different substances

• flavour (ENNDS or non-nicotine electronic cigarettes)
• nicotine, with or without flavour added (ENDS)
• cannabis (THC oil), with or without flavour added (ENDS or ENNDS?)

Manufacturing and importation largely unregulated – no quality control over how  products are made or what chemicals or toxins they contain

• can contain nicotine, even when labelled 'nicotine free' – no way of knowing if a device contains nicotine without laboratory testing

Counsellors’ presentation: ‘Let’s talk consent’

At the end of last term, the College Counsellors presented a wonderful discussion on consent law. The Presentation ‘Let’s talk about Consent’ was so successful that a second follow up session will be presented this term. Consent is an extremely important topic and having the correct information and recourses to educate our students in essential.

Many students had questions about consent, it became very clear that some were confused or had misleading information and needed additional support. In conclusion, our young men are very aware of consent laws, they understand the importance of respectful relationships. These attitudes and beliefs need to be revisited constantly through their school life.

 ‘The Rite Journey’ Year 9 program 2022

The College is excited to announce that our Year 9 students will be attending ‘The Rite Journey’ camp next week. Students have been preparing all year for this moment and we wish them and their homeroom teachers all the very best.

The Rite Journey is a unique educational programme designed to support the development of self-aware, vital, responsible, and resilient adults.

Given the current lack of Rites of Passage in the Western World, young people are left to invent their own, which are often unhealthy and unsafe.

The Rite Journey reinvents the traditional process of a Rite of Passage to assist in transforming the adolescent from dependency to responsibility.

The program will involve additional training from the College staff and very strong involvement from parents of Year 9 students. Students will soon embark on a 2 day camping expedition that will further develop our ‘Boys to Men’.  Please visit https://theritejourney.com/ for further information.

Student welfare matters

The College expects all students to attend school with the appropriate haircut in summer uniform and clean shaven. Please make the required adjustments. the College will continue to uphold the highest of standards which are expected from each student.

College Hair Policy

HAIRCUTS & PERSONAL GROOMING

Students at St Gregory’s College are required to take great pride in their appearance. Each student must take responsibility for their hair, personal grooming and overall appearance as a St Gregory’s young man. Staff will monitor student haircuts and personal grooming on a daily basis.

Haircuts

• Students are required to wear their hair in a neat and tidy manner.
• Haircuts should be of an even grade.
• Hair should be well brushed and combed.
• Nothing shorter than a number 2 comb is acceptable.
• Small amounts of hair products can be used to keep hair neat and tidy.
• Students are permitted to have neat and tidy ‘Low Fades’ style haircuts (minimum number 2 comb fade).

The College will not allow: -

• Haircuts that are of an extreme style or in a condition that negatively draws the attention of staff.
• Coloured, bleached or dyed hair.
• Lines, undercuts or steps.
• Hair extending below the eyebrows or touching the shirt collar.
• Aggressive (0 & 1 comb) high ‘Skin Fades’.

Personal Grooming

The College will not allow: -

• Long sideburns.
• Facial hair – students are to be clean shaven at all times.
• Eyebrow slits.

The College Merit system update Term 4

As we get down to the final 6 weeks of school, it is important that all our students remain motivated and focused. During Monday morning assembly a reminder was issued to all students, in the hope to achieve a College Medallion by the end of the year.

HSC Examinations

Our HSC students have made an excellent start on their exams with 12 out of 33 examinations now completed. Students have shown their trademark resilience preparing for their three-hour examinations. We wish Year 12 students the best of luck as they complete their exams and sign out of the College.

On Thursday 15 December, the College will welcome back our HSC students for a HSC Results Breakfast. After a nervous wait, our HSC Students will have the opportunity to reflect on their marks together and be congratulated by their teachers.

Early in the new year, the College will also celebrate with its HSC High Achievers’ Assembly.

Year 11 Transition into Year 12

During the next few weeks, there will be several important events that will mark our Year 11 students’ transition into Year 12.

Students will attend their Year 12 Retreat in Week 4. This will be followed by VET Work Placement which is a compulsory part of each VET framework (Construction, Retail Services, Primary Industries and Fitness). On Wednesday 23 November there will be a Year 11 Awards Assembly in the morning and an Information Evening Online that evening.

Stage 5 Electives and Stage 6 Course Selection

Students’ course offers will be made by the end of Week 5. Students will then have the end of the term and the beginning two weeks of next year to make changes if necessary.

It is amazing to think that graduation was 4 weeks ago. Congratulations again to the 21 young men that graduated as boarders from the College. It was an honour to be a part of the celebrations and share in what will be life long memories for you all.

On the night of our final Boarders' Mass, a number of awards were announced. We congratulate the following major award winners:

HSC Exams

Our graduating class have commenced their HSC exams. The boys are maintaining a tremendous level of motivation in relation to their study and preparation, and we continue to pray for them as they manage this challenging period in their lives.

2023 Boarding Leaders

During our recent Boarding Graduation Mass, we had the opportunity to invest our 2023 boarding leaders in front of the boarding community. We congratulate the following young men:

Jake Wright – Boarding Captain (Lord Howe Island), Jack Kingwill (Adjungbilly), Peter Reardon (Gundagai), Will Stimson (Temora), Patrick Bird (Forbes), and Angus Liddle (Camden).

The new leaders have just undertaken a 3 day retreat in Mittagong discussing leadership and setting goals for what they want to achieve this year. We wish them all the best on this journey together and look forward to watching their progress.

Bali memorial

Last week, I had the honour of escorting thirteen exceptional young men to Dolphin Point in Coogee to honour the 20-year memorial service for the victims of the 2002 Bali bombings. Our students were there to support the current Year 7 boarder, Jordi Elkin, his mother Jane, and his grandparents, John and Colleen Mavroudis, who lost their son and brother David in the blast 20 years ago.

It was a humbling experience to stand alongside dignitaries such as the Prime Minister and NSW Premier, all there to remember the 88 Australians who lost their lives in this terrible act of terror. For our young men to hear the stories of the victims' families, to see the hurt and anguish on the faces of the families, and to have the opportunity to pay their respects by laying a flower at the memorial was an experience they will remember, and hopefully draw strength from in the future. We wish all the Mavroudis and Elkin families the very best wishes at this difficult time.

Summer Sport

Our ISA summer sport season for Basketball, Cricket, and Touch Football commences this coming weekend. All families have been emailed the season fixture list and coach contact details. We look forward to seeing you around the venues on a Saturday supporting your son. If you have any questions in relation to Saturday Sport please get in contact with me directly.

Upcoming events

There is a large number of events that your son will be involved in over the next couple of weeks. We are attending Australia’s Word Cup T20 opening match at the SGC against New Zealand. We will be attending a Sydney Kings Fixture, we have a number of finance talks for our Stage 4 (Year 7/8), and Stage 5 (Year 9/10) boarders, and our Year 12 class of 2023 will be heading on their Year 12 retreat. Communication and Social Media

The Australian Boarding Schools Association produces a quarterly magazine called ‘Lights Out’. It is a wonderful resource that has lots of interesting stories relative to Boarding. It is a wonderful resource, and I would encourage all of our boarding families to make use of it.

CCC/ All Schools Athletics

At the end of Term 3 the College had several representatives attend the CCC carnival with some fantastic results from the boys.

There were nine St Greg’s boys who qualified, and the best of the results were as follows:

• Cooper Clugston - 1st in the 1500m (in what was probably the race of the day, he also made sure to shake hands with every competitor in the race afterwards, great kid). He then finished 4th in a very fast 800m.
• Kingston Tuatani - 1st in the 100m by 1 hundredth of a second!. Then backed it up with a 2nd place in the High Jump.
• Lachlan Stanley - 1st place in the Discus and 3rd in the Javelin.

There were a number of 4th and 5th places (Max Anastasio in the 800m and Jake Wright/Oliver Kaluzyn in the High) and the boys were terrific all day.

Off the back of these terrific performances the College had 3 boys represent CCC at the NSW All Schools Athletics carnival which took place the first weekend of the school holidays.

Adriana - our martial arts champion

Earlier this year, Year 1 student, Adriana Grados trained very hard for her very first Jiujitsu Martial Arts competition.

She was very focused during the event and managed to defeat two very tough competitors, placing her first in her age group and winning a gold medal. Congratulations Adriana!

Nicola and Chris - our Baseball Champs

Nicola and Christopher Blyton have been playing Baseball since 2014 (yes, aged 4 and 3!) with the Bankstown Braves.

They are making Baseball awards a very family affair as well. At the 2022 Macarthur Baseball League Presentation they were both awarded State Champion, with Nicola also receiving a Rookies Cup Award and Christopher receiving three Rookies Cup Awards, as well as the Most Valued Player 2022 Award. Their Team was also awarded ‘All Stars Team of the Year 2022’.

If the Blyton trophy cabinet was not already bursting at the seams, Christopher and Nicola also attended an International Baseball Tournament, “Down Under Winter Classics’ in Surfer’s Paradise in July, after trying out and being selected from many more experienced players. They performed incredibly well, holding their own against International and National teams. Go Blytons!

We are certain that we will see the Blyton name in future Baseball drafts!

Accomplished Riders - Isabella Tolomeo and Cooper Williams

Year 5 students Isabella and Cooper have been riding since they were little and they continue to collect prizes and awards for a variety of different type of horse riding.

Isabella has been riding since she could walk, getting her first pony, “Patchy” for her third birthday.

Isabella’s first competition was Camden Show, and she then competed at the NSW State Appaloosa Championships, Australian Appaloosa Championships, and National Pleasure Horse Association of Australia events. These events require Isabella to compete against riders of similar age, being judged at the walk and trot as well as walk and jog. 

To date, Isabella has achieved:

2016 Reserve National Champion Leadline 10 years and under

2017 Reserve National Champion Leadline 10 years and under and NPHA National Champion Leadline 10 years and under

2018 Reserve National Champion Showmanship 10 years and under, National Champion Leadline 10 years and under, National Pleasure Horse Association National Champion leadline 10 years and under

2019 National Champion Showmanship 10 years and under, Reserve National Champion Walk Trot 11 years and under and Reserve National Champion Walk Jog 11 years and under

2022 she was National Pleasure Horse Association Reserve National Champion Walk Jog 10 years and under

Isabella’s next goal is to compete at Nationals in 2023 and to win a National title for her age group. All the very best of luck, Isabella.

Cooper’s skills are in another area of riding- he is an excellent barrel racer. In barrel racing, you ride a horse in a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels that are set in the middle of a ring in a triangular formation.

Cooper and his pony, “Sparky” are the best of friends and they love getting into the ring and racing together.

Also in Year 5, Cooper Hayes might just have the best hands in Cricket in the district.

Cooper recently received a Camden District Cricket Award for the most Keeper Dismissals in Under 11’s, Division 2.

Young cyclist, Darcy

In August our very own Darcy Marsden in Year 3, competed at the Junior State Championships for Road Cycling in Wollongong. Competing in the Under 11 years Grade, Darcy is two years younger than his competitors!  Across the 3 races he rode, Darcy achieved 4th, which is an outstanding effort given his age.

His parents, however, are MOST proud of his tenacity, heart and sportsmanship. Darcy took risks in his racing strategy and showed enormous courage taking on riders that were much bigger than himself.

Although Darcy didn't make the podium, by all accounts he is definitely an up-and-coming rider.

The Celebrity Sports Dinner is a black-tie, adults-only dinner attended by over 700 guests each year which includes representatives from local Councils, State and Federal Governments and business owners from the Macarthur region. 

In the past, our guest speakers have included Peter Sterling, Anna Meares, Cathy Freeman, John Eales, Garth Tander, Layne Beachley, Michael Slater, Wayne Bennett, Ian Thorpe, Glenn McGrath, Stirling Mortlock, Lauren Jackson, Brett Emerton, Phil Gould, old boy of the College, Alex McKinnon and Sally Pearson. 

Jimmy Smith, media personality and former NRL player, and Olympic Gold Medallist, Sarah Ryan, will once again return to co-host the dinner.

The Celebrity Sports Dinner is the most significant fundraising event for the College. These funds will ensure that St Gregory’s College is able to continue developing high-quality facilities and programs that support the achievement of our young people in all facets of their education.
