College News for Term 4

Mr Matthew Brennan - College Principal (K-12)

Start of Term 4

It has been a great start to Term 4. Thank you to the families who ensured a smooth start for all involved by ensuring their child returned to start the term prepared for a positive start.

HSC

These important exams began last week. From speaking with the Year 12 cohort, the boys have felt well prepared. I would like to recognise all staff who worked very hard to put the students in this position, as well as the students themselves. There were many workshops held over the holidays and I would like to thank the following staff for making themselves available during the recent break: Mrs Giles, Ms Sawyer, Mr Bullock, Mr Papadopolous, Miss Khoury, Ms James, Mr Bingham, Ms Tansey, Mrs Santos, Mr Todd, Mrs Gardiner, Mrs Arentz, Miss Phillips and Mr Bombardiere.

Culture...Constantly Evolving

Mr Joel Weekes - Assistant Principal

Dear Members of the St Gregory’s Family,

Welcome back to the final term of the 2022 academic year. It is amazing how time flies by so quickly! As I pointed out to the students and staff earlier this week at our lineup and assembly, this coming term is a ‘sprint.’

In today’s Senior School assembly, I shared a Simon Sinek quote with the boys ‘A culture is not invented. A culture constantly evolves . . . which is why it must be nurtured’

We know that building a strong culture is what builds a strong school. Our 96-year history has been evolving and has been built into the College that St Gregory’s prides itself on today.  Our boys and girls who will pass through the College, have a joint responsibility in wearing the blue and maroon to continue to provide a legacy of being students of character and substance.

Junior School News

Mrs Diana Ivancic - Head of Junior School

Dear St Gregory’s Community,

It is hard to believe that we are in the final term of 2022. This term has begun in a very positive way, with great learning and enthusiasm. It is wonderful to see our students making gains in their learning from kindergarten right through to Year 6. They are certainly developing their learner profile attribute as ‘Thinkers’.

2023 Student Leaders

One of the privileges I have as Director of Mission is to work with our student leaders. This week we were able to take time away from school and gather at our spiritual home in Mittagong. Miss Keith and I, along with our 18 elected leaders, were able to spend this time learning and planning for 2023, focussing on the Christian model of Servant Leadership and the Marist charism.

Wellbeing News!

As the warmer weather arrives it was wonderful to see our students return to school in their summer uniform. Term 4 always has an exciting and motivational vibe. As our students gear up for a very animated 9 weeks, it is evident that they have hit the ground running. We also keep our Year 12 students in our prayers as they hit the halfway point of their HSC exams. I have been speaking to several students as they exit their exams and there is a strong sense of relief and excitement as they near the end.

Sport Report - Term 4 Week 2

At the end of the last term, our AFL and Touch Football teams finished off their seasons with all teams securing semi-final positions. After successful seasons by both our U/14 and U/17 AFL teams they were good enough to secure a spot in the Grand Final. Unfortunately, both AFL teams were unsuccessful in their Grand Final games. The Year 8 Touch Football had a tremendous season and finished their season in style winning their Grand Final 4-1 against a quality team from St Dominic’s

Summer Sport trials have finished and the PDS round starts this Thursday. Well done to all boys who were successful in gaining positions in their respective squads. Our U/15 and Opens Cricket teams have the Berg and Downie shield Round 2 matches upcoming with details around when games are to scheduled still be finalised. The College will also be sending a Year 7/8 and Year 9/10 Basketball team to compete at the NSW CCC Basketball Tournament competing on 31 October and 1 November. Good luck to all teams in these upcoming matches.

The U13, U15 and U17 Rugby League teams will play Illawarra Sports High School this Thursday in their first friendly matches for Term 4. A good challenge for all boys involved coming up against a prestigious sporting school.

Baulkham Hills Volleyball Sydney Cup

Our College Volleyball team competed in the Under 17’s division of the Baulkham Hills Volleyball Sydney Cup at Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday 15 October.

Our A team, consisting of Malachi Agoo, Killian McNamara, Logan Duke, Caleb Dreggs, Zach Velasco, Ken Nguyen and Dylan Sharp were narrowly defeated in the semi-final by the BHV Club Rep Team and finished 3rd.

Our B team consisting of Josh Heylin, Nicholas Adams, Rocky Russo, Lucas Ryan, Oisín Chretien, Ethan Toby and Sean Sullivan finished 5th, beating Blaxland High School in their final game.

To have our Years 7, 8 and 9 students competing in an Under 17’s competition and winning their games is a huge achievement. The Years 10 and 11 boys are to be commended for their leadership on the court as they faced very well drilled representative club teams from across Sydney.

Mrs Sandra Hackett

Student Sporting Achievement

Lachlan New from Year 9 travelled to Florida during the last 3 weeks of Term 3 to represent Baseball NSW in two baseball tournaments.

His team won the first tournament - the Jackie Robinson Labour Day Beach Bash, but unfortunately due to severe storms the second tournament was shortened, so no finals were played.

It was a great experience for him with lots of memories made.

Year 12 Mathematics

On Wednesday 19 October, approximately fifty Year 12 students attended a special Mathematics Study.  It was offered to the Year 12 students that were sitting the Mathematics Extension 2, Mathematics and Mathematics Standard 2 HSC paper on the following Thursday.

Rooms 422 and 421 were abuzz with a total of 6 teachers in attendance. The atmosphere was filled with both peer tutoring, one-to-one teacher/student tutoring and teacher to small student group tutoring. We are hoping that this extra chance to have a focused study time on Mathematics will pay off in their HSC results.

A huge thank you to the teachers for giving up your time after teaching all day and to the gentlemen that attended.

Christmas in a Box

This year the Junior School will again be taking part in a charity fundraiser for Christmas called ‘Operation Christmas Child’. Operation Christmas Child is a project of Samaritan’s Purse. It is a hands-on way to bless children in need across the world by filling shoeboxes with toys, hygiene items, school supplies, and fun gifts. For most of these children, it will be their first or only Christmas gift.

Each family was sent home a shoebox and brochure in Week 1. Please refer to the brochure for the information on payment and how to pack the boxes.  We ask that all boxes be returned to school by Friday Week 3 – 28th October. This will allow enough time to organise getting the boxes to Samaritans Purse in time to be shipped overseas.

A big thank you to the generous families who have already sent their boxes in. If your family would like an extra box, we have them available in the office.

Confirmation

At the end of the last term, a group of students from Year 6 received the Sacrament of Confirmation at St Mary Mackillop Catholic Parish, Oran Park.

Over the course of 6 weeks, students, with guidance from their parents at home, completed a preparation course that led to three sacred celebrations of the Sacrament led by Bishop Brian and Father David Catterall. Congratulations to the students of the college!

May the Holy Spirit guide you, bless you and make your heart open to the beauty of God in every day.

Year 5 Canberra Trip

This week, students in Year 5 undertook an education tour of the nation's capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

The 3-day trip to Canberra included visits to the new and old Parliament House, The War Memorial, Questacon, The Mint and the Embassies. It was an amazing opportunity to visit Australia’s capital city and consolidate much of the learning about the Government that they participated in last term during, Class Parliament.
