On the 17-19 August, Year 12 student Sam Batten attended World Skills in Melbourne. Over 4000 apprentices, trainees and students compete in The WorldSkills Australia Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) Program. It is a series of work-simulated projects based on industry standard frameworks which are designed and administered by practicing teachers and industry professionals.
Sam has provided a summary of what his time at Worldskills involved:
A couple of weeks ago I had the privilege to attend the 2023 Worldskills National Championships. As a part of my completion of a Certificate II in Agriculture at the College, I was granted the opportunity to compete at the Sydney region qualifier for the “skill” of Primary Industries. After being notified that my score had been high enough to secure my place in the NSW team I headed down to Melbourne for seven days. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded people who I was able to compete alongside through the competition. The competition itself included an opening and closing ceremony as well as the three days of competition, where competitors were asked to build both an electric and wire fence, operate a tractor and implement, calibrate and operate a boom spray, drench undertake stock work as well as complete a theory aspect to each task. I'd like to thank our Agriculture leader Miss Mahoney for the opportunity to compete. Overall it was a great week that really allowed young people to display their talents in their chosen skill.
We congratulate Sam on this wonderful achievement of qualifying for World Skills.
