Australian Mathematics Trust - Maths Challenge for Young Australians

The Mathematics Challenge is Mathematics Extension program which aims to foster students’ understanding of the power of mathematics and the joy of problem solving. The Mathematics Challenge is the first stage of the MCYA. It is a series of very perplexing problems that the students have six weeks to complete. Marks are awarded for the logic behind the answers and the boys are challenged to justify their solutions with clear concise reasoning.

Thirteen St Greg’s boys undertook the Challenge Stage, and they are all to be congratulated on their efforts.

Five boys achieved outstanding results and they will be presented with their certificates at an upcoming assembly;

  • Lachlan Selby of year 8 and Ethan Kenney of year 9 achieved High Distinction Awards.
  • Rhys Morton of year 7 achieved a Distinction Award. Mitchell Williams of Year 9 and Declan McManus of Year 8 earned Credit awards.

Lachlan, Ethan, Rhys and Declan are now embarking on the next stage of the MCYA – the Enrichment Stage. The Enrichment Stage is and extension program for talented students to widen their mathematical knowledge and skills which involves working through a booklet of problems to develop skills which they then utilise to solve sixteen challenging problems which must be submitted before the end of this term.
