Last Wednesday, Our First Nations students from the College, were privileged to host the NRL’s Referees, as they celebrated the NRL Indigenous Round week. Our Junior School Leaders and First Nations Students Performed an Acknowledgment of Country Before the Senior Boys performed 2 dances.
The Senior Boys then hosted a dance workshop for the team of Refs, before the refs hosted a theory session for those students who have an aspiration to become a referee.
The First Nations boys were able to sit with Mr Humphries and NRL Indigenous Strategy Engagement Manager Danny Allende to discuss the various roles available for those who wish to have a career in sports outside of being an athlete.
This was followed by a cultural session for the Senior boys and team of referee’s where they were shown how to make fire, told the story of the Yidaki (Didgeridoo) Man, and then a Coolamon was cut from a local Grey gum tree, whilst learning both traditional and contemporary methods for cutting them.
The day ended with a reflection and respects being paid to Dharawal people and those whom lost their lives at the Appin Massacre site. Both student from the Junior and Senior school were there to represent and pay respects and assist in the ceremony that took place.
Mr Humphries would like to acknowledge the support received from parents who attended the reflection at the site as well as acknowledge the support from parents Gerard Sutton and Peter Jensen for their assistance in making the day of celebrations, learning and reflection such a positive and inclusive one for all.
