Over the last term, Year 2 have had a lot of interesting and exciting things happen.
During our PYP unit: ‘How the world works,’ we were investigating forces and energy that help to improve products. Through this central idea we looked deeply into the different forms of energy, the effects of forces in product design and the process of scientific investigations.
We undertook a variety of different investigations such as:
- How can we use sound energy?
- How can we use light energy and what produces light energy?
- What materials can we use to make maracas?
- How can we use heat energy?
The effect of gravity on an Egg
Our egg drop experiment was the highlight of the unit. The students were placed in groups of four and were challenged that if we dropped an egg off the balcony, what materials would keep the egg from breaking? The students discussed the properties of the different materials and designed their own plans. As little scientists, they decided who was bringing in certain materials and made decisions independently. The day finally came, and they created their apparatus. We had some groups who were successful, and their eggs did not crack! They all had a great time creating this experiment and reflecting on what they could do better next time.
